How to Check If Your UCR Registration Is Current for 2026 and 2027

If you operate a trucking company, private fleet, or other business covered by Unified Carrier Registration, completing the annual filing is only part of the process.

You should also verify that the registration was recorded correctly.

A company may have paid a third-party service but not confirmed its official filing. Another business may be current for 2026 but have overlooked the 2027 renewal.

Fortunately, UCR registration can be checked electronically.

This guide explains how to verify your filing, review the correct registration year, confirm the fee bracket, and address missing information.

Where Can You Check UCR Registration?

The official place to start is the UCR National Registration System at:

UCR

Use the system’s available registration lookup or verification tools.

Locate your business using its identifying information, particularly the USDOT number.

Select the year you want to review.

Confirm whether the company shows a completed registration.

If you have trouble finding the record, contact the official UCR helpdesk.

Step 1: Find Your USDOT Number

Before beginning, confirm the correct USDOT number and legal business name.

This matters when a company operates under a DBA, has changed its name, or is related to another transportation business.

The registration should correspond to the correct legal entity.

Do not assume that a related company’s filing covers your business.

Step 2: Choose the Correct UCR Year

UCR is an annual requirement.

A 2026 registration covers the 2026 registration year.

A 2027 registration covers the 2027 registration year.

The payment date may be earlier than the registration year.

For example, a payment made in October 2026 may apply to 2027.

Check the actual year rather than relying on when the payment was made.

Step 3: Confirm the Registration Was Completed

Review the official registration record.

A credit-card charge or third-party service receipt does not always prove that the UCR filing was completed.

You want confirmation that the registration was successfully recorded for the correct entity and year.

Retain the confirmation after verification.

Step 4: Check Whether 2027 UCR Is Open

The official 2027 UCR registration portal opened October 1, 2026.

Covered businesses must complete registration and payment before January 1, 2027.

This means businesses should complete the 2027 renewal by December 31, 2026.

Do not wait until the first day of the registration year to begin reviewing your records.

Step 5: Verify the 2027 UCR Fee

The approved 2027 UCR fees are:

Qualifying commercial motor vehiclesOfficial 2027 fee
0–2$55
3–5$167
6–20$333
21–100$1,163
101–1,000$5,548
1,001 or more$54,165

Covered brokers and leasing companies pay $55.

These are official registration fees. Optional private filing assistance may cost extra.

Step 6: Compare With 2026 Fees

The 2026 UCR fees remain relevant when checking an older registration year.

Qualifying commercial motor vehiclesOfficial 2026 fee
0–2$46
3–5$138
6–20$276
21–100$963
101–1,000$4,592
1,001 or more$44,836

Covered brokers and leasing companies paid $46 for 2026.

A payment amount should always be evaluated against the year it was intended to cover.

Step 7: Confirm the Correct Vehicle Count

For covered carriers and applicable freight forwarders, UCR fees generally depend on qualifying commercial motor vehicles.

Trailers are not counted as power units for the ordinary UCR carrier fee calculation.

The number of drivers is not the fee bracket.

A company with several drivers but one qualifying truck may still fall into the zero-to-two-vehicle bracket.

However, the proper count must be determined under the applicable UCR rules.

Step 8: Review Intrastate Vehicle Exclusions

Certain qualifying vehicles used exclusively in intrastate transportation may be excluded under an available UCR counting method.

Specific conditions apply.

The business may need to maintain a list of excluded vehicles and provide supporting information to its base state.

Do not automatically exclude every truck that primarily operates within one state.

Step 9: Check Prior-Year UCR Registration

A current registration does not necessarily mean the company has no earlier unpaid obligations.

Review 2026, 2025, and other years when the business was subject to UCR.

If an older year is missing, confirm whether the company was covered during that period.

Then determine the applicable fee and correction process.

Step 10: Check Automatic Renewal

The UCR Plan’s October 8, 2026 guidance explains that enrolled 2027 automatic renewals use Option A and the power-unit count from the most current MCS-150.

The system uses the payment card previously authorized for the program.

However, an automatic-renewal reminder does not prove the transaction completed.

Verify the official 2027 registration status after processing.

Step 11: Compare the MCS-150 Power-Unit Count

The MCS-150 contains power-unit information reported to FMCSA.

That information can matter when reviewing UCR calculations, especially for certain automatic renewals.

If the company has added or removed equipment, check whether its reported information is accurate.

An MCS-150 update does not itself complete UCR payment.

Step 12: Do You Need a Physical UCR Certificate?

No.

The UCR Plan confirms that drivers are not required to carry a physical UCR credential in the commercial motor vehicle.

Registration can be verified electronically.

Nevertheless, keeping a copy of the registration confirmation with company records is a useful administrative practice.

Step 13: What If UCR Shows No Registration?

Confirm that you selected the correct year and USDOT number.

Check the legal entity.

Review any payment receipts.

Determine whether UCR applied to the business during that year.

If the registration is genuinely missing, complete the required filing or contact the official UCR helpdesk for assistance.

Step 14: What If the Fee Bracket Is Wrong?

Review the qualifying vehicle count and the method used.

Determine whether the filing contains an error or whether the apparent discrepancy has a valid explanation.

Use the National Registration System or contact the appropriate UCR authority about correction procedures.

Do not assume that simply filing a new MCS-150 automatically changes a completed UCR registration.

Step 15: What If the Company Is No Longer Operating?

Stopping transportation activity does not automatically resolve historical UCR obligations.

Review the dates and nature of the company’s operations.

Determine whether it was subject to UCR for each relevant year.

Address USDOT registration status and operating authority separately when appropriate.

Step 16: Do Brokers Need to Check UCR?

Yes, if they are covered by the UCR program.

A covered freight broker generally registers annually even without owning trucks.

The official 2027 fee for covered brokers is $55.

Brokers should verify the correct registration year just as carriers do.

Step 17: Do Private Fleets Need UCR?

Qualifying interstate motor private carriers of property generally must register.

A manufacturer, distributor, or construction business may be covered even if it does not transport freight for compensation.

The correct determination depends on the actual operation.

The UCR Plan provides an official eligibility questionnaire.

Step 18: What Happens If UCR Is Late?

The UCR Plan states that registration fees remain due after the deadline and that nonregistrants may face state enforcement.

Enforcement personnel can verify registration electronically.

The UCR Plan identifies the inspection violation code 392.2 UCR for failure to pay UCR fees.

Consequences depend on the applicable state and circumstances.

Step 19: Keep an Annual UCR File

Maintain the registration year, official confirmation, payment receipt, fee bracket, qualifying vehicle count, and relevant correspondence.

Keep supporting information for any vehicle exclusions.

Record the date of the review and any corrections made.

A consistent annual file can make the next renewal easier.

Step 20: Set a Recurring Renewal Review

Schedule a review before the next registration year.

Confirm the business’s current operations and vehicle count.

Check whether automatic renewal is enabled.

Verify the payment method if using automatic renewal.

After payment, confirm the completed registration through the official system.
